Looking ahead to COP 27
Our Investment Manager Ciaran Garvey contributed a short gallery feature for Citywire Wealth Manager ahead of COP 27.
“COP27 will take place against a backdrop of high food and energy prices and slowing growth. The invasion of Ukraine has created a difficult balancing act for governments between energy security and achieving net zero goals, but the hope for COP27 as put by Egypt’s former minister of investment is that the world moves away from ‘summits to solutions’.
Increased investment in energy transition will be key. We recently added to our holding of Smart Metering Systems (SMS), which earlier this year started trading from its first battery storage site, supporting an increasing mix of renewable energy on the grid. As well as a growing pipeline of battery storage projects, SMS is also developing its capabilities in areas such as EV charging.
A recent UN report highlighted the need for a substantial cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C. It is our hope that the current divisions the world faces do not stall cooperation on climate at COP27”.
