“A rich, dark, healthy place … and a beautifully lit vantage point from which to look at the world.” Songwriter Michael Marra, the ‘bard of Dundee’.
Dundee is a small city with a history of seriously punching above its weight. It’s a pioneering city, from Captain Scott’s Discovery to contemporary medical and surgical breakthroughs.
With its roots in whaling and its reputation made on ‘jute, jam and journalism’, emerging Dundee investment houses were at the forefront of the financing of the American settlers and railroads in the 1880s.
It’s a city that’s enjoying a cultural renaissance with the V&A and other developments on the banks of the Tay and leading the way in the global games industry. The “thriving, creative” city of Dundee was also rated as one of the best places in Europe to visit in 2018 by Lonely Planet.
Thorntons Investments is proud of its Dundonian roots and its renewed buoyancy and, with many of us being Dundonian, the team espouse its typical characteristics of being canny, down-to-earth, hospitable, self-deprecating and able to see an opportunity where others only see an obstacle.

Shirley’s career in Financial Services spans 30 years, starting at Gateway Building Society in a customer services role and moving on to Bradford & Bingley where she gained her professional qualifications, undertaking the role of Senior Financial Planning Adviser. Eager to further her career, she was delighted to be selected as the first Branch Manager of a new local branch of Skipton Building Society who were expanding their network of branches in Scotland. Shirley has spent most of her career in a client facing role, however, in more recent years, she has been using that experience and applying it to her current role as Compliance Manager. Sam joined Thorntons Investments from Barclays Bank in July 2019. Sam’s interest in the markets and all things financial began back in 2008 while running a beauty salon in Dundee where she spent a lot of time manning reception listening to clients fretting about the ‘credit crunch’, so much so it felt like hysteria. Sam felt compelled to understand what was going on and began to realise that the beauty industry wasn’t for her, and perhaps there was a more interesting opportunity afoot!
Sam initially joined Barclays as a cashier, and navigated her way from retail banking to the Wealth management team, where her interests lie.
To summarise Sam’s experience of joining Thorntons Investments – ‘It’s an absolute pleasure to work for a bespoke investment house based in my home town of Dundee and to continue learning from the incredible wealth (see what I did there) of knowledge in this office’.
Born and raised in Yorkshire, Sharon began her career in Financial services in 1987 when she left school to join General Accident. Three years later, Sharon joined Naafi Financial Services as a customer services adviser, working predominantly with military personnel and their families in North Yorkshire and overseas in Germany, rising to Team Leader and Branch Manager, before returning to Catterick Garrison running branches both in Yorkshire and the North of Scotland. A move with the military saw Sharon move to North East Fife 20 years ago where she became Office Manager at a small family firm of Financial Advisers. Sharon had a break from financial services to undertake a variety of roles, including a move to Portugal to carry out voluntary work, before returning to NE Fife and re-entering the industry, finally joining us in December 2019 as Portfolio Management Assistant.
